Michelle Strand, the physics and AP physics teacher at the High School, held her first annual West Fargo Cardboard Boat Regatta at the LE Berger Pool this past year. Applying their knowledge of fluid motion, students in all of her classes got the opportunity to put their creativity and engineering skills to the test as they worked in teams to build full-size boats made solely out of cardboard and different kinds of adhesives. Two group members then raced their boat the length of the pool, going down and back against other teams. Awards were presented to the fastest boat, as well as the best theme, the best design, and many other fun awards such as the most spectacular sinking. With a total of 26 boats racing, the pool was packed with spectators from all around cheering on their favorite team bringing a very upbeat and exciting energy to the atmosphere. Due to all the positive feedback and attention from the boat regatta, Michelle Strand has high hopes of continuing the project for years to come.
